L’Opera dei Pupi patrimonio immateriale
The Puppet Opera Intangible Heritage
In its twenty-fourth edition, “La Macchina dei Sogni” once again pays homage to the Teatro dei Pupi, dedicating almost its entire program to the Opra, especially considering the UNESCO recognition, which has included it in the “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” Seven years after this recognition, the UNESCO initiative is now ratified by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities.
What has happened from the first edition to today? What transformations, differences, and similarities exist with traditional theater? And what does today’s “Macchina” intend to (demonstrate) show? Through its performances and other initiatives, the Festival attempts to answer these and other questions, following the artistic and design line that animates the art of Mimmo Cuticchio and his “children of art.” This includes his material trace made of puppets, puppeteers, manipulators, and fighters, as well as the immaterial one, nourished by oral tradition, a memory to love and respect, to possess and guide alongside the necessity to experiment to build a new one, so that one enriches the other.
The Festival begins on December 8th with an important and unique exhibition of puppets built by puppeteers, operators, and amateurs from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. The schedule of performances is dense; similarly to the first edition of the Festival, it is a “family album” where, in addition to the shows created by Mimmo and his brother Nino Cuticchio, the works of the new generation of children of art are also showcased: Giacomo Cuticchio, Filippo, and Fulvio Verna Cuticchio. Their presence at the Festival is a well-deserved achievement because, although they are sons and nephews, like other students, they attended the “School for Puppeteers and Storytellers” founded by Mimmo in 1997, following the stages of the usual apprenticeship, and are now beginning their own journey.
Alongside the performances of the young puppeteers, there are shows by two other students of the School, who combine the stories of the Teatro dei Pupi with narration and puppet theater: Flavia D’Aiello, a puppeteer from Salerno, and Linda di Giacomo, an actress and puppeteer from Verona.

La donna nel teatro
Women in the theatre
Dedicated to women in theater, the festival will once again take place in Polizzi Generosa from August 8th to 20th. All the shows in the festival are written, directed, or performed by women, or they address themes related to the female universe. From idealized figures passed down to us orally or through literature, to the sorrowful heroines and nameless martyrs of our days who become emblems of a declining civilization. Angelica, Lucrezia Borgia, Tina Merlin, Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Joan of Arc, Mata Hari, princesses, and witches from fairy tales, all together, side by side in an imaginary female constellation where themes of civil commitment also stand out.
All events are ideally dedicated to a singular woman: Pina Patti Cuticchio, a woman who managed to earn a respected role in the male-dominated domain of the Teatro dei Pupi, following the family’s activities for over sixty years, first alongside her husband Giacomo—painting scenes, posters, backdrops, and managing the family-theater—and then working with her son Mimmo in the production of new shows, painting scenes and creating costumes.
Nineteen shows are produced by as many companies from all over Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. On the evening dedicated to the “stories of places,” held for the second consecutive year, Vincent Schiavelli is remembered, an unforgettable protagonist the previous year in The Awakening of Don Quixote and an honorary citizen of Polizzi Generosa, to which he had dedicated dreams, affection, and sympathy, having passed away a few months before the festival.

Le trame di Don Chisciotte
The plots of Don Quixote
For the second consecutive year, “La Macchina dei Sogni” returns to Polizzi Generosa, taking place in the squares, courtyards, and streets, to pay homage to Cervantes’ Don Quixote on the fourth centenary of the publication of the first of its two volumes. This anniversary aims to highlight the emblematic role that Cervantes’ work has played as a watershed between two eras, positioned between the twilight of the Middle Ages and the dawn of the modern world. Cervantes’ novel is the common denominator of the meetings, performances, workshops, installations, animations, and all other initiatives of the twenty-second edition of the festival, conceived and directed by Mimmo Cuticchio. Eleven companies are present at the festival with their works on Don Quixote, each showcasing different poetic and representative techniques. Street performances, pure narration shows, figure theater, shadow plays, and “cunto” intertwined with music are scattered throughout the town, which becomes, albeit for a few days, one large stage.
Of particular note is The Awakening of Don Quixote, which is more than just a show; it is an unrepeatable event. Spread over three evenings and various spaces in the town, the itinerant performance enhances the fantastic and theatrical dimension of Cervantes’ work, suggesting a layered and very current interpretation. It involves not only a large number of storytellers but also the film actor Vincent Schiavelli in the role of Don Quixote.

I Sentieri dei narratori
The Paths of Storytellers
From July 15 to 31, 2004, the Festival gathers artists, scholars, and researchers to outline the new map of narratives, in a setting that spans from East to West and unfolds between past and future. Exhibitions, installations, workshops, games, performances, and a conference provide a concrete contribution to reflecting on the various expressions of narration in theater and related art forms.
Despite the countless transformations that the performing arts have undergone over the centuries, whether enduring or producing them, the human need to tell stories has never diminished. The narrator embodies this need; his body is the instrument for transmitting the foundational values of individuals from one civilization to another. For this reason, it can be said that the narrator is a true “living heritage” and should be safeguarded and encouraged as such.
Starting from these premises, the event promotes a debate on narration, intertwining cultures, languages, and different paths: from oral to literary narration, from popular traditions to contemporary communication.
Alongside the performances, which feature the participation of international artists, there are two workshops: one aimed at young people and the other at professional actors, and a conference attended by distinguished scholars, researchers, and theater masters. The starting point for the reflections and insights is the “cunto” of the Sicilian tradition. Reflecting on the transformations that “cunto” has undergone over time, Cuticchio proposes and animates a great workshop on narration, bringing together new generations of artists with some of the greatest masters and scholars from Italy, Europe, and Asia.
The event concludes symbolically with “La notte dei racconti” (The Night of Tales), a ritual event that involves all artists and the public in an ideal journey along the paths of the Madonie Park.

Sulla rotta di Moby Dick
On the Route of Moby Dick
The festival sets sail again from the sea and from Palazzo d’Aumale, home to the Regional Museum of Natural History and the Permanent Exhibition of the Sicilian Cart in Terrasini (PA), which is the absolute protagonist of the event. The arrival at Palazzo d’Aumale aligns with the purposes for which the festival was created. Throughout its journey, whenever possible, we have sought to engage with the artistic heritage because it holds an irreplaceable part of our human and civil growth.
For this reason, the start of the events is marked by a guided tour titled “On the Trail of Moby Dick,” constructed in a non-traditional way and aimed at discovering the museum’s collection through songs and narration, with the intent of revealing the museum’s living soul, which is too often regarded merely as an immobile container of artworks.
The tour winds through the museum’s halls; the visit is enriched with spectacular interventions featuring music, literary excerpts, poems, videos, and dances related to the sections of ethnology, natural history, and archaeology-paleontology, and concludes with a performance on the theme of the sea, presented on subsequent evenings. The twentieth edition of the festival offers performances with diverse content and forms. These are representations by companies of recognized professionalism from various parts of Italy, focusing on puppet theater, storytelling, and music. Notable mentions include Tam Teatro Musica from Padua, with an interesting show on Ruzzante, and Teatrino della Marignana from Mogliano Veneto, which stages a truly hilarious Macbeth. Our own production, titled “On the Trail of Moby Dick,” debuts at the festival, part of a study of Melville’s story.
The show draws inspiration from countless voices rising from the sea; an operant-storyteller, a puppet maker, a puppeteer, and an actor-narrator join hands, diving in search of a common thread, following their imagination. Melville provided the inspiration, Mimmo Cuticchio is both Captain Ahab and storyteller, tasked with weaving together various chapters, blending literature and popular tradition.

Puppet Theatre and Figure Theatre
For the second consecutive time, the event takes place in Sortino. The project delves deeper into the work begun the previous year: the conference proceedings are published, and “suggestions” are presented for a bill in favor of the Teatro dei Pupi. This bill aims to protect, preserve, and enhance the companies that perform continuously, while also encouraging and stimulating new ones that are following a path already marked by those who, like us, have resisted so far.
This edition is enriched by an extraordinary event. During the eighteenth edition of the festival, UNESCO awarded a prestigious recognition to the Opera dei Pupi, declaring it an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” This recognition is highly significant because it acknowledges not the puppets as artifacts or museum objects, but the living theater in which they play a central role. It honors the long cycle of stories about the paladins, passed down from ancestors to descendants, from father to son, or from master to apprentice, encompassing craft techniques and imagination. It directly addresses public institutions, urging them to intervene with appropriate legislative measures.
This edition strengthens the previous year’s project but brings the Teatro di Figura closer to the Teatro dei Pupi, rekindling the relationship between puppets, marionettes, and hand puppets. As always, a series of initiatives complements the event: exhibitions, meetings, and a project specifically designed for schools, involving a group of compulsory school students in an expressive-theatrical workshop. In this workshop, the techniques for manipulating recycled materials to create props, marionettes, and hand puppets are illustrated. The workshop concludes with a performance that the students present in the square.

Serate Speciali
Special Evenings
“La Macchina dei Sogni” continues its journey and arrives in Sortino, in the province of Siracusa. At the invitation of the local authorities, the event incorporates the third puppet theater festival that had been held in the Iblean town for the past two years.
As usual, this edition features exhibitions, installations, meetings, and debates, engaging everyone—adults, children, young and old alike. However, it places special emphasis on the “census” of active puppeteers, builders, and painters, brought together in a conference aimed at laying the groundwork for a proposed law in favor of the Teatro dei Pupi. This proposal is discussed by all the puppeteers of Sicily.
The festival is not just about performances but includes a myriad of initiatives distributed simultaneously across various spaces, aiming to engage scholars, artists, and spectators alike.
The theme chosen for this edition is “Special Evenings,” featuring shows of pure poetic invention. Some of these are inspired by tradition, others are from new repertoires, and some involve pure scenic innovation with visible manipulation and a blend of epic-chivalric language with street theater.

Roncisvalle
Roncesvalles
“La Macchina dei Sogni” moves to several towns in the Madonie Park (Sicily). We discuss the project with the Regional Assessor for Cultural Heritage, who proposes involving as many towns in the Park as possible. In this case, the festival could be directly promoted by the Region. Together with the officials, we draft an initial schedule of meetings to engage the mayors of the interested towns.
However, despite the project being planned a year in advance, many difficulties arise in carrying it forward. It soon becomes apparent that many mayors do not attend the meetings, so it is decided that only eight towns will participate in the event: Aliminusa, Collesano, Gratteri, Isnello, Petralia Soprana, Pollina, Polizzi Generosa, and Sclafani Bagni.
The theme is “Roncisvalle” and the protagonists are the companies of puppeteers from all over Sicily, along with some storytellers, puppet and street theater groups, and the historical group of Casteltermini Tataratà.
The project aims to present the great tradition of the Teatro dei Pupi, mobilizing every resource, both dramaturgical and of the puppeteer’s craft, and the techniques of the storyteller for a performance beyond genres and involving collective participation.
The idea is for each group, company, or individual storyteller to narrate, in each participating town, a part of the events that will converge in the final act of the route to Roncisvalle. The concluding gathering of all the artistic presences of the festival takes place in the large square of Polizzi Generosa. Three puppet theaters in the Palermo style and one in the Catania style are set up at three points in the square, and eleven storytellers arrive from different paths. The Tataratà group mingles with the audience to showcase their rhythmic sword dances to the beat of drums, evoked by the storytelling of Mimmo Cuticchio, who enters the scene astride a large wooden horse. Angels and demons launch firecrackers and fireworks to contest the souls of those who fall in battle.

Ultima edizione
Latest edition
Why the last edition? Perhaps because it’s the end of the year, end of the century, end of the millennium? The Olivella district is an ancient part of the city where Mimmo Cuticchio lives and works; his Teatro dei Pupi has existed since 1973, but even in the 1960s, his father operated in the parallel Via Orologio. Today, the historic center is being revitalized, and our greatest satisfaction is seeing a vibrant street, full of young artisans who, together with the last surviving locals, have opened every possible workshop. From the ancient lathe to papier-mâché horses, ceramics, fabric paintings, and gold and silver chiseling. So, we consider steering the “Machine” towards other places, where fewer “events” are organized. The editions held so far in Palermo have educated an audience on the various types of theater we have proposed; we begin to think that perhaps it would be a good idea to move to seek a new audience. In any case, we strive to make this an extraordinary edition for us.
The participation of the artisans’ workshops on Via Bara is fruitful, as well as those hosted in every corner of the street. Each shop creates installations using scenographic elements, decorations, photographs, and videos from past editions while also presenting new works.
The entire neighborhood is celebrating; the street is full of lights, festoons, drapes, and colorful panels, but also of aromas, as restaurateurs offer tastings of ancient recipes.
A conference reviews figure theater and, once again, clarifies the difference between puppets, marionettes, and hand puppets, as well as the eighty different traditional types that exist worldwide in the string theater realm.

Dedicato all’Opera
Dedicated to Opera
The realization of this edition, in Via Bara all’Olivella, follows other successful experiences that have sparked an interest partly unexpected even by the organizers. In a city that daily overwhelms us with ever more “extraordinary” events, the festival offers us the opportunity to establish points of contact with figure theater in general and to continue work with new generations, increasingly focused on the appreciation of puppets, marionettes, hand puppets, shadows, marottes, and mannequins. This edition is a significant moment for deepening the understanding of the Opera dei Pupi, of which the Association is a diligent custodian. Moreover, the edition coincides with the 25th anniversary of Mimmo Cuticchio’s little theater.
Via Bara all’Olivella is organized as a large stage, where several panels are set up as wings, depicting the shows that our Company has produced since ’73. Starting from Teatro Massimo, along the axis of the street, up to Piazza Olivella, colorful panels of traditional shows are positioned. Walking in the opposite direction, black and white panels for research shows are displayed.
The structure of the festival, as usual, includes, besides performances, exhibitions, and installations. Over the years, this tendency has deepened and become more precise, especially due to the artistic direction’s determination, which has increasingly emphasized the need to make the festival a panorama, albeit infinitesimal, of expressive freedom. The year 1998 coincides with the reopening of Teatro Massimo, our illustrious neighbor, giving us the opportunity to dedicate the fifteenth edition specifically to opera theater. The shows are numerous, most of them dedicated to opera.

Tra i ruderi di un castello
Among the ruins of a castle
After two years of hosting the event in Via Bara all’Olivella, the idea was born to move the festival to other spaces. Architect Silvana Braida proposed organizing it at the Castello di Maredolce, the Castle of the Fawarah, named after the park that once stretched from Monte Grifone to the sea. The park was also known as Maredolce, after the spring that flows from the foot of the mountain.
This edition of the festival does not feature the usual array of performances seen in previous years. Instead, the focus is on rediscovering the Castle and its history, which will be narrated to the audience through a guided tour by actors, musicians, and performers, enriched with scenographic elements. It is a special evening titled “Among the Ruins of a Castle,” a dramaturgical montage by Salvo Licata featuring excerpts from works by Michele Amari, Dino Campana, Milton, and Arab poets, directed by Mimmo Cuticchio and starring actors Paola Pace and Giuseppe La Licata.
The opening show of the festival is “Francesco e il Sultano” by Mimmo Cuticchio and Salvo Licata, presented as a new production. Mimmo’s oral narration is complemented by Gianni Gebbia’s saxophone improvisations and Giuseppe La Licata’s visual fragments, creating a unique dialogue-concert where the words become rhythm and song, and the live interaction with Gebbia adds musical substance to the many characters evoked.
The show “Baba Yaga” by Teatro dei Fauni from Locarno takes the audience on a journey into the fantastical world of Russian folk tales, through a dramaturgical creation that brings together various elements of that tradition into a single story, guided by the notes of Musorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.”
“Cendres” (Ashes), created and performed by French artist Gilles Coullet, explores the cyclicality of existence and the search for harmony through constant attention to movement and body expression. Organized in four tableaux, the show traverses a suggestive symbolic path, a ritual starting from the origins of humanity.
“One More Kiss” is a two-part performance by Claudio Cinelli, where the protagonists are hands that become countless characters. “L’Iliade Ripresa” is a reduction by Luì Angelini and Paola Serafini from the Cervia-based company “Arrivano dal Mare.”

Un Paese chiamato Olivella
A country called Olivella
The symbolic image of this year’s edition comes from the hands of a young German girl from the Brandenburg region. It is one of the very colorful drawings that some schoolchildren dedicated to our theater and the members of the company. The drawing is specifically dedicated to Mimmo and depicts a sort of magician, part clown, part puppeteer, against a background of Christmas stars, doves, and other festive symbols, rich in colors, predominantly those of the Italian flag.
Unable to forego performances and our tours, this edition also takes place in winter. Now, in December, we will have to adapt to whatever the weather brings, and in any case, we will find the “ideal climate” for the show “La Natività. Storie annunciate dai tetti” (The Nativity. Stories Announced from the Rooftops).
The program is quite extensive, alternating traditional shows with those of puppets, marionettes, and storytelling, with an in-depth look at the oral tradition of Romagna and street theater, attracting an audience of both adults and children who are apparently open to everything but are severely critical if the show lacks rhythm and emotion. And naturally, there is also music, provided by groups that conduct special research among materials derived from folk music, such as Terra Arsa by Gianni Gebbia, Miriam Palma, and Vittorio Villa; and Luigi Lai, one of the most authoritative masters of Launeddas from Sardinia.
The exhibition section is substantial: it begins with an installation along Via Bara, curated by Roberta Civiletto, featuring pastoral figures and angels, a sort of nativity scene narrated from the balconies, continuing with a caravan of puppets for a peace nativity scene where Christians and Saracens lay down swords, scimitars, and clubs to say a decisive “no” to the ongoing wars and massacres that still plague various populations around the world.
3 – 13 maggio
Manovra a vista, musica, animazione.
